Decreasing File Size by Removing Hidden Meshes (New for V6.5)

An object can sometimes be created with layered meshes, especially a clothed character. However, if there is no need for revealing the inner layers by removing the outer layers, it is always a good solution to remove the hidden inner layers for decreasing the size of the exported OBJ file.

  1. Load a layered object (in this case, a CC Character) into 3DXchange.

Some of the meshes are made hidden by the feature provided in iClone Character Creator in order to enhance the performance of iClone.

The originally layered meshes of the object.

Some of the inner meshes are made hidden to relieve the loading of the system.

  2. In the main menu, choose File/Export to Other 3D Format/Export OBJ....
  3. Activate the Remove Hidden Mesh box.
  4. Click the OK button to export the avatar as an OBJ file.
  5. Deactivate the Remove Hidden Mesh box and export the model into OBJ again.
  6. Compare the size of these two files. The file that has been exported with this feature is smaller than the other one.
  7. Load back these two OBJ files to observe the status of the meshes. In the illustrations below, the outer layers of the two file are hidden for better observation.

The inner meshes are kept when the feature is not activated.
