Splitting Mesh by Materials for HitFilm (New for V6.5)

In Hitfilm, one mesh can only be assigned with one material. However, 3DXchange allows a mesh to have multiple materials which causes incorrect material results after Alembic is applied to the object in HitFilm.

The one-piece mesh (in red wireframe) with multiple materials.

The mesh is rebuilt incorrectly in the 3D tool that does not support meshes with multiple materials.

  1. Select the mesh with multiple materials in 3DXchange.
  2. You can find more than one item in the Material drop-down list for the mesh.
  3. In the Main menu, choose File/Export to Other 3D Format/Export OBJ....
  4. Activate the Split Mesh by Material box.
  5. Click the OK button to export the avatar as an OBJ file. The mesh will be split into different meshes (represented in two wireframe colors) in accordance to the corresponding materials.
  6. Load the OBJ file into the 3D tool that does not support meshes with multiple-material.
