Using Set Finger Range Panel (New for v1.1)

The raw tracking data received from the mocap devices may be not always be suitable for all hand gestures. Sometimes, you may want to exaggerate or ease the hand gestures for characters.

After setting the Zero Pose for characters in the Motion LIVE 2D plug-in panel, you can further adjust the weight and limitations to optimize their hand gestures. The benefits are:

  • Default hand pose profiles are optimized for hand mocap devices.
  • Defined hand pose sliders can be saved as Custom Capture Profiles.

ClosedUser Interface Introduction

ClosedA. Gear Name

Displays the current gear name.

ClosedB. Current Profile Name

Displays the current profile name. When you load a new profile, the name will be changed as well.

The default profile (*.json) files exist in the following path:

  • Windows: C:\Program Files\Reallusion\Cartoon Animator 4\bin64\OpenPlugin\MotionLive2D\common\finger_normalize_default_data.json

ClosedC. Hand Gesture Profile

Select from the Hand Gesture Profile drop-down list to set the weight and limitations of these two hand gestures.

  • Open Palm: define the maximum value for posing the fully open hands (fingers spread).
  • Closed Fist: define the maximum value for posing the fully closed hands (clenched fists).

ClosedD. Global Hand Strength

Type in a value or adjust the slider to set the pose threshold of Open Palm or Closed Fist gesture profile for the whole hand.

ClosedE. Show / Hide Fingers

Use the Show drop-down list to set the visibilities of right and / or left hand fingers under the Individual Finger tabs.

ClosedF. Individual Finger Tabs

Type in a value or adjust the slider to set the pose threshold of individual finger bone listed under each finger tab. By activating / deactivating the checkbox before the name of each finger bone, you can either involve or exclude the finger bone from the pose threshold.

The corresponding finger bone IDs are illustrated below:

ClosedG. Zero All and Reset Buttons

Click the Zero All button to set all slider values to 0. Click the Reset button to reinitialize slider values to their factory presets.

ClosedH. Load and Save Profile

You can click these two buttons to save or load a custom profiles with different pose thresholds of the sliders.

ClosedSetting the Finger Range
  1. Prepare a character with Bone Hand.
  2. Connect to a hand capture device in Motion LIVE 2D.
  3. Click the Set Zero Pose button to complete the calibration process for the hand gestures - Open Palm and Closed Fist.
  4. Click the Preview button, and press the Space Bar to motion capture the two gestures of the character.

    You may find the right-hand thumb is loosen for a fist, and the left-hand fingers are not fully spread for an open palm.
  5. Click the Set Finger Range button to fine-tune the finger range for the two gestures.
  6. The Set Finger Range panel will open. From the Hand Gesture profile drop-down list, select Closed Fist to set the right-hand finger range for a fist pose.
  7. To exaggerate the thumb bent, pose a closed fist gesture in the Preview mode, and adjust the right-hand thumb sliders under the Thumb tab according to the Finger Bone IDs in the previous section. You may choose Right Fingers from the Show drop-down list to hide the left-hand finger sliders.

  8. To modify the open palm gesture, switch to the Open Palm gesture profile.
    Then pose an open palm with fingers spread apart in the Preview mode, and adjust the left-hand thumb, index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and little finger sliders under respective tabs. You may choose Left Fingers from the Show drop-down list to hide the right-hand finger sliders.

    LFinger10 = 0

    The left-hand fingers are not fully spread.

  9. When you are satisfied with the preview result, you can save the current adjustments to a custom profile.
