Capturing Upper Body Motion

You can choose to capture motions which focus on upper body and gestures such as performing sign language, playing musical instrument, or speech performance. This is essential when a recording of the actor is cut off below the pelvis.

Performing sign language.

Playing musical instrument.

Speech performance.

  1. For example, import a video of a person performing sign language into Video Mocap. Make sure at least the body from the pelvis up is clearly visible.
  2. The Edit Video panel will appear automatically. Alternatively, select the imported video in the Task Queue, and click the Edit button to open it manually.
  3. Preview the video and trim it to isolate a region for processing. Set the Start Time and End Time for the motion capture length (between 1 to 60 seconds), or hover over and drag the range to several frames behind to focus on motion in another range.
  4. Select the Upper Body for motion capture in the Detection section. Enable the Includes Fingers to capture finger motion. Click the Apply Settings button at the bottom to confirm your settings and exit the window.
  5. Return to the Video Mocap panel, and you will see the task status is "Trimmed". Click the Generate Motion button near the bottom-left corner.
  6. Check the payment information shown on the DA Charge for Video Mocap dialog. Click the Purchase button to generate a motion from the clip.

  7. In case of errors, monitor the progress bars shown on the Status column while the processing (may take 5–8 minutes to complete).
  8. Once the motion is successfully generated, the task status will display "Applicable". You are now able to click the Apply Motion button near the bottom-right corner to apply the motion to a selected character in the scene.
  9. The motion will be applied to the character with the reference video appearing behind it. Playback to observe the generated motion. You will only see the upper body animation with hand gestures while the body motion below the hip is ignored.
  10. For a speech video with only the upper-body motion recorded, you can add facial expressions with AccuFACE to make the character talk.
